Policeman Disarms Knife-Wielding Assailant With Kindness — Literally

A police officer in Thailand managed to disarm a knife-wielding assailant by being empathetic versus violent. A hug is more powerful than a bullet here.

It seems almost every day another negative news story comes out about police. This, thankfully, is not one of those stories.

A police offer in Thailand is being acknowledged as a hero after he successfully stopped a knife-wielding man in the most bizarre way.

According to Daily Mail, on June 17, a man entered the Huay Kwang police station armed with a large knife. Instead of shooting though, Officer Anirut Malee spoke calmly and eventually convinced the 45-year-old man to hand over the knife. Malee then did the unthinkable: He went in for a hug. The officer threw the knife away mid-embrace and made sure to search the man for other weapons, signaling to the others standing around, to keep their distance.

In an interview with Thai Visa, Malee said, “He used to be a musician but had been working as a security guard for three days and had not been paid. On top of this, he had had his guitar stolen and it was all stressing him out. I heard him out and sympathized and said I had a guitar to give him, and suggested we go out for a meal together.”

The unidentified attacker was not charged and was sent to a local hospital for a psychological evaluation.

Meanwhile, Malee is being praised and dubbed a hero for his rational actions and calm approach to de-escalation. One man took to Facebook and posted this about the officer.

Another person wrote, “Such a very kind man. Sometimes, a little kindness is all a person needs. Much respect and gratitude to this fine officer.”

Malee’s story demonstrates that there are situations in which violence can be prevented and that a bit of empathy can go a long way.
