This Black Actress's Mother Was Arrested Over A Library Book

Tika Sumpter took to Twitter after her mother was arrested for a $10 library fee: “An overdue book should NEVER result in a warrant.”

In rather unbelievable news, one actress’s mother was arrested for an overdue library book. Yes, literally arrested… for a $10 fine.

Tika Sumpter, a producer and model who played Michelle Obama in “Southside With You,” tweeted about the incident, warning North Carolina residents to turn in their library books.

Sumpter tagged the specific library, the governor of North Carolina, and the North Carolina attorney general in her tweets, expressing her blatant shock and fury.

Her followers were right there with her.

Considering North Carolina’s conservative political climate— remember that horrific transgender bathroom law that was passed in March? — as well as growing tension among groups, it’s easy to form theories about the arrest, and how race came into play.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Sumpter revealed that her mother had, in fact, returned the book, and the librarian had just forgotten to enter it into the system.

Luckily, she was released, but it’s safe to assume the incident was traumatic for both Sumpter’s mom and Sumpter herself.

If you happen to live in North Carolina and you lose or forget to return your library book, you can do one of two things: Pay the fee after the fact, or run for the hills. Run like mad.
